Transfer an eSIM to a New Phone Without Stranding Your Number

Transfer an eSIM to a new phone safely. Keep the old phone available, use your carrier’s supported route and verify activation before erasing anything.

Treat an eSIM transfer as a service change, not a backup task. It depends on both devices, their software, carrier support, and plan type. Keep the old phone powered, unlocked, and nearby until service works on the new one.

Prepare both phones and the account

Update both phones to the latest software they can use. Confirm that the new phone supports eSIM in its exact regional version and that it is not blocked by a carrier lock. Have Wi-Fi available, know the account sign-in process, and back up your phone data separately. A backup does not itself guarantee that the mobile plan transfers.

For an iPhone-to-iPhone move, Apple documents Settings > Cellular > Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM, then a listed plan or Transfer From Nearby iPhone. The old and new devices need Apple Account sign-in, the old device passcode, proximity, Bluetooth, and other stated prerequisites. When the new plan activates, Apple says the previous SIM is deactivated .

On current Pixel guidance, Google describes Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Transfer SIM from another device. Automatic transfer has device, software, screen-lock, and carrier conditions . Menu paths on other Android brands can differ.

Do not erase the old phone yet

Follow the carrier’s supported transfer route or ask it to issue the correct activation method. Do not delete the old eSIM because the new phone asks you to tidy up; wait until the new line is shown as active and can complete a real call, text, or data test appropriate to that plan.

A travel eSIM provider may not permit transfer, may require a new profile, or may use different validity rules. Ask that provider before removing anything. Keep its original order information and support channel available.

Confirm service, then clean up

On the new phone, label the line, choose it for the correct function, and verify service on a small test. Only then follow the old carrier/provider’s removal or cancellation instructions. Samsung notes that removing a mobile plan from the phone does not itself end the carrier contract .

For setup after the transfer, use the iPhone installation guide or the Android installation guide. If the transfer stalls, follow eSIM troubleshooting without deletion before resetting either phone.
