How to Install an eSIM on Android: A Device-Safe Route

A safe Android eSIM installation guide. Find the right settings path, use a provider QR code or app, and check the new line before relying on it.

Android menu names and activation flows differ between Pixel, Samsung, and other makers. Use your phone maker’s support instructions and the provider’s activation message, not a path from another device.

Confirm support before opening the QR code

Check the exact phone model, regional variant, current Android version, and whether it is locked to a carrier. A phone can contain eSIM hardware yet still need the carrier or provider to support that model and plan. If you bought the phone outside the provider’s usual market, ask the provider to confirm the IMEI or device ID. Google gives the same advice to Pixel users who did not buy directly from their carrier .

Use trustworthy Wi-Fi and charge the phone. Keep the activation message handy, ideally on another device. A QR code may contain plan-specific information, so do not post it in a chat, screenshot it for support, or scan a replacement code unless the provider explicitly issued one.

Use the route that matches your phone

On a current Pixel, Google’s documented settings route is Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Set up an eSIM . Follow the on-screen options; the carrier may present a QR scan, a download prompt, or its app.

On many Galaxy phones, Samsung documents Settings > Connections > SIM card manager > Add mobile plan. From there, a compatible provider may offer a pre-assigned plan, a QR code, or an activation code . Labels can change with software and region, so stop if your screen says something materially different rather than forcing a nearby option.

Check what actually changed

When setup completes, open the SIM or network screen and confirm the new plan is present and enabled. Give it an understandable label. Decide whether it should handle mobile data, calls, or both; a travel eSIM may be data-only, so do not assume it can receive calls or SMS.

If the plan is visible but data does not work, first check the assigned data line and the provider’s activation instructions. Then follow how to set a travel eSIM as your data line and the safe eSIM troubleshooting sequence. If you are changing handsets, use the eSIM transfer guide before erasing the old one.
