eSIM Not Working? Troubleshoot Without Deleting Your Plan
Fix an eSIM that will not install, activate or connect. Follow safe checks for iPhone and Android before contacting your carrier or provider.
Identify the stage: it will not install, it will not activate, or it has no data. Avoid deletion until the provider directs it; the issue may need account-side help.
Start with the simple device checks
Use reliable Wi-Fi for installation. Confirm the exact device supports eSIM, the OS is current, and the carrier or provider supports your model and plan. Check that the new line is visible and enabled in cellular or SIM settings. Toggle Airplane Mode once, wait briefly, then turn it off. Restart the phone if the line remains absent or stuck.
For iPhone, Apple advises checking Settings > Cellular, restarting, and looking for a carrier-settings update in Settings > General > About. Apple also recommends current iOS and an active plan from a carrier that supports eSIM . On Android, use the maker’s SIM settings and its official support steps; Google tells Pixel users with persistent setup trouble to contact the carrier .
Match the symptom to a safe next action
If the QR code will not scan, make sure it is the original code from the provider and is shown clearly on another screen or printed page. Use the provider’s official app, link, or manual method only if it explicitly offers one. Never type a guessed activation value.
If the profile installed but data fails, check that it is selected for mobile data, that any provider-required data-roaming setting is correct, and that you are in the plan’s supported location. Test with Wi-Fi off briefly. Do not confuse an out-of-coverage area, a plan not yet active, or a data-only plan with a hardware failure.
Escalate with useful, private information
Before contacting support, note the precise error, the device model and regional variant, OS version, plan order/reference, and the time you tried. Apple suggests gathering the phone number, carrier account credentials, IMEI, and EID for carrier support, but provide identifiers only through the carrier’s legitimate support channel . Never send account PINs, QR codes, or activation credentials to a public forum.
If you are moving phones, read how to transfer an eSIM safely. If data is the only issue, revisit choosing the eSIM for mobile data and the manual activation guide only when your provider issued the needed details.
