How to Choose the Right SIM for Mobile Data and Keep Your Number
Use an eSIM for mobile data while keeping your main number. Learn the settings decisions, tests and safety checks for iPhone and Android.
A dual-SIM phone can hold more than one line, but it still needs instructions about which line handles mobile data, calls, and messages. A useful travel setup often keeps a home number available for calls or verification messages while a travel eSIM supplies data. Whether that works depends on your exact phone, regional variant, carrier terms, and the travel plan’s features.
Name the lines before you change defaults
Open your phone’s cellular or SIM settings and label each line in plain language: “Home number” and “Travel data,” for example. Read the provider’s product description to confirm whether the travel plan is data-only. Do not expect a data-only line to handle normal voice calls or SMS.
On iPhone, use Settings > Cellular to see the installed lines and choose the relevant line for mobile data. Apple’s instructions say the new line should appear under eSIMs and be turned on after setup . On Android, open the phone’s SIM or network settings, where labels differ by manufacturer. Google documents its Pixel path under Network & internet > SIMs .
Assign data deliberately
Choose the travel eSIM as the mobile-data line only when the plan is ready to use. Keep the home line enabled only if you want to receive its calls or messages and understand any carrier roaming consequences. The settings for “data switching,” “mobile data switching,” or an equivalent label can let a phone fall back to the other line. Read the description on your device before enabling it; if avoiding unexpected home-line data use matters, leave switching off unless you have a confirmed reason to use it.
Turn data roaming on or off only according to the travel eSIM provider’s instructions. That switch controls a device’s use of a partner network; it does not create coverage or change a plan’s included countries.
Verify with a low-risk test
With Wi-Fi off for a moment, load one lightweight webpage and check which line is shown for data. Then restore Wi-Fi if you are still configuring. If your number or data behaves unexpectedly, return to the labeled line list rather than deleting anything.
