How to Install an eSIM on iPhone Without Losing Your Main Line

Install an eSIM on an iPhone with a QR code, carrier activation, or an app. Check the safe prerequisites and verify the new line before travel.

An eSIM is a digital cellular plan on your iPhone. It does not automatically replace your number, but a transfer or activation can change which line is active. Decide whether it is extra travel/data or a replacement before starting.

Check the four things first

Confirm that your exact iPhone model and regional variant support eSIM, update iOS, and confirm carrier or provider support. Connect to reliable Wi-Fi. Apple’s current setup guidance identifies Wi-Fi or a hotspot as a normal prerequisite, with limited regional exceptions for some eSIM-only models . If the plan comes from a different carrier, check Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. “No SIM restrictions” means Apple reports the iPhone as unlocked .

Keep the QR code and activation email available on another screen. Do not share an activation code.

Add the plan using the method your provider issued

Open Settings > Cellular and choose Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM. If the provider gave you a QR code, choose the QR option and scan it. If a code arrived in an email or browser on an iPhone running iOS 17.4 or later, Apple says you can touch and hold the QR code, then choose Add eSIM . Follow the prompts and enter a confirmation code only if the provider supplied one.

If you see a “Finish Setting Up Cellular” notification, use it rather than scanning a code. A provider may also require its own app or offer manual details. Follow the path the provider sent; do not guess values or reuse details from another plan.

Verify before you depend on it

Return to Settings > Cellular. Confirm the new line appears and is switched on. Give it a clear label such as “Travel data,” then check its settings before making it the data line. Make a small data test only after the provider says the plan is active. If this line replaces your number, ask the carrier when the previous line will stop.

If the installation stops, do not delete the partly installed plan immediately. First work through eSIM not working: a safe recovery sequence, then use a pre-travel eSIM activation checklist. Moving to another iPhone? Read how to transfer an eSIM safely before changing either device.
